I am Adwoa Lennox-Bell, a 49-year-old Jamaican. My mother tongues are English and Jamaican Creole or Patois. As a former British colony, English is Jamaica’s official language, and it is taught in all schools, including kindergartens. A big difference between Jamaican Patois and English is that we do not use the ‘th’ sound. For example, we say ‘tik’ for the English ‘thick’ and ‘dem’ for ‘them.’ I think learning English would be a great asset because English is spoken by at least 340 million people. It is good for traveling, business, leisure, meeting new people, accessing different cultures, and going to school. Having fun makes learning easier.
