『本当の英語』リスニング
みなさんは『本当の英語』と聞いて、どのような英語を思い浮かべますか。今日英語は、異なる母語を持つ人々の共通語として広く使われています。しかし、私たちが学校で耳にする英語の多くは北米出身の声優が話すきれいな英語で、世界各地で独特のなまりで話されている多様な英語を聞く機会はほとんどありません。そこで私は、日本人英語学習者が世界で話されている『本当の英語』に親しみ、日本語なまりを意識しつつ、堂々と英語を話してほしいという願いを込めてこのサイトを作りました。
When you hear the phrase “real English,” what kind of English do you imagine? English is widely used today as a common language for those who have different mother tongues. However, most of the English we listen to at school is spoken by professional voice actors and actresses from North America. We have little chance to hear the many different varieties of English being spoken around the world, each with its own accent. I have created this website hoping that Japanese learners of English will familiarize themselves with “real English” spoken across the world and that they will speak English confidently, understanding that they have a Japanese accent.
このサイトでは、大学入試センター試験英語リスニングの問題130問を、実際のテストで使用されたオリジナル音声とノンネイティブスピーカーによって録音された再現音声を聞きながら解くことができます。問題は、2010年から2018年に出題されたダイアローグの中から、Z会が集計した問題毎の正答率に基づき選ばれた易しめの100問と、2006年から2015年に出題されたモノローグ30問から成ります。問題は約800人の高校生と大学生に行った予備調査の結果を参考に、大問ごとに易しい順に並んでいます。
On this website, you can answer 130 questions from the National Center Test for University Admissions, choosing between the original recordings by native English speakers and the reproduced recordings by non-native English speakers. The questions consist of 100 easier dialogues selected from the ones asked between 2010 and 2018 based on each question’s correct answer rate calculated by Z-kai Inc. and 30 monologues asked between 2006 and 2015. The test items are arranged in ascending order of difficulty based on the results of preliminary tests administered to about 800 high school and university students.
今日私たちは、英語のネイティブスピーカーよりもノンネイティブスピーカーと接する可能性の方が、はるかに高い状況にあります。2022年の日本貿易振興機構（JETRO）の調査によると、日本企業が海外拠点を置く国や地域は、多い順に中国、タイ、アメリカ、ベトナム、EUで、上位10位の中で英語圏はアメリカだけでした。このことから、日本人が仕事で英語を使う相手の多くは、ノンネイティブスピーカーであると言えます。このため、再現音声は日本人が仕事や観光で訪れる可能性が高いと思われる30の国や地域出身の英語のノンネイティブスピーカーによって録音されました。さらに問題とは別に、吹き込み者が自己紹介と、それぞれの国で英語がどのように学習・使用されているか語っています。いろいろな英語なまりに親しむために、是非問題を解く前に吹き込み者紹介を聞いてみてください。
We are more likely to encounter non-native English speakers than native English speakers today. According to a survey conducted by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) in 2022, countries and areas where Japanese companies had their overseas branch offices were, in numerical descending order, China, Thailand, the United States, Vietnam, and the European Union. The United States was the only Anglophone country in the Top 10. This means many people with whom Japanese businesspeople communicate in English are non-native speakers. For this reason, non-native English speakers from 30 countries or areas that the Japanese are more likely to visit on business or for sightseeing participated in the recording. Moreover, apart from the recordings for questions, speakers introduced themselves briefly and talked about how English is learned and used in their countries. To get used to various English accents, I suggest that you listen to the speakers’ speeches before answering test questions.
英語は、母語として話すネイティブスピーカーより外国語や第二言語として話すノンネイティブスピーカーの方が多い、珍しい言葉です。このため、日本人のように『本当の英語』に触れた経験の乏しい英語学習者が、英語や英語を話す人々について正しい理解を持つことは、堂々と英語を話すためにとても重要です。そこでこのサイトでは、英語の使用状況や英語使用者に関する10の〇×クイズを用意しました。聞き取り練習の合間にクイズに挑戦し、自分の英語の知識を試してみてください。
English is a unique language since non-native speakers who speak it as a foreign or second language outnumber native speakers who speak it as their mother tongue. As a result, a correct understanding of the English language and its users is crucial for English learners, like Japanese, who have little exposure to “real English,” to speak English confidently. For this reason, this website has 10 true or false questions. Try the quizzes and test your knowledge of English while practicing listening.
